Writing on Greeting Cards!

January 2, 2015 at 6:43 PMBernie Keane

Happy New Year to all you Crafters out there, hope this year brings you all health, happiness & prosperity so that when you look back it will hold many happy memories!!!

Mistakes You Make While Writing On Greeting Cards!

Greeting cards express emotions that are usually difficult for an individual to convey. Even though, the card embellishment, colour and theme play an essential role in greeting cards, the message written on the card is its most important aspect.

It should make someone laugh; help them get through a difficult time, uplift someone’s mood or make someone’s day special. It can be difficult to write a message on the card, especially for a designer who is designing a greeting card and doesn’t know who will buy it.

A verse or a unique quotation might seem like an excellent idea to write on the greeting card, but designers must keep in mind that it might not be something that the customers are looking for. They need a message that is short, simple and honest. However, some greetings on cards make the customers move away from it as it doesn’t speak to them, even if it has been beautifully designed and has amazing card embellishments or die cuts used on it. But it is important to remember that everyone cannot be pleased all the time but we want to please the majority!

Here are a few common mistakes made while writing on greeting cards:

Too Many Adjectives

There is no need to add way too many adjectives on the card. It is a greeting card, not an essay or a book. Too many adjectives merely slow down the reader and makes the text on the card endless, lengthy and boring. Messages on greeting cards should be short and to the point.

Being Artificial

Too many flowery or poetic wordings can make it all seem too false. If you are trying too hard it will come across as inauthentic and superficial. Just write a message that comes naturally to you.

Restricting the Buyers

This is a common mistake made by card designers – limiting the market. “A Father’s care is immeasurable to his daughter – Happy Fathers Day Dad!” What is wrong with this greeting? It is limiting the buyers. Only daughters will buy this card and that too on Father’s day.  However, if you edit the message to “A father’s care is immeasurable!” This can be used by anyone at any occasion.

Being Formal

Being too poetic or/and using words like ‘alas’ and ‘whom’ can make the greeting too formal. People want a card that expresses their feelings properly. It is best to write the way you would talk. Avoid lengthy and difficult words. Keep it casual.

Gratitude, sympathy, hope, love and inspiration expressed on greeting cards speaks to the readers and make them feel special. So make sure the greeting cards you make for commercial use follow the guidelines mentioned

If at first you don’t succeed, craft & craft again!!

Carry on Crafting

The 4 Basic Steps To Creating A Greeting Card

Receiving a greeting card, especially a handmade one, is always delightful. It is a sweet gesture indicating that someone spent their time and effort to design or select a card especially for you. If you want to make someone feel special and brighten up their day, make a handmade card for them. It is not as difficult as you think it is and it is affordable! There are so many cheap craft supplies available in the market from which you can make dozens of cards.

A beautiful card can be made by following these 4 simple but effective steps:

Step 1: Select a Theme for your Card

First of all you need to select the theme of the card; keeping in mind the occasion and the person you are giving the card to. Is it for Christmas for your grandparents? A birthday card for your best friend?A thank you card for a colleague or a teacher? Set the theme and select the appropriate message for the card. You can also decide at this stage whether you want to put the greeting on the front or inside the card or maybe a bit of both!!

Step 2: Choosing The Base

Once you’ve chosen the theme you move onto selecting the base. Use a blank cardstock in whichever colour you think best suits your theme. Such as red for Christmas, blue for a baby boy, pink for a special little girl. Select the size and paper material. Alternatively you could use a plain white card and add colour to your chosen colour to it in a different way. Once you have selected the paper base for your card, fold it in half.

Step 3: Layering and Dimensions

This is the best part of all. This is where your creative juices really get going!! Start adding one or many layers of coloured sheets. There are so many paper crafting sheets with different textures and colours to add dimension in your card. Select the ones that go best with your theme.

Step 4: Adding The Bling

Here you can go crazy with embellishments. Add pearls, charms, rhinestones, tags and whatever you love. This is when you add the sparkle in the card, the piece de resistance!! Make it as pretty as you want. If you are good at sketching, then you can even draw something on the card. You might even add a picture of you and the recipient.

See how easy card making is? Just add in the personal note and you are done and dusted. The best thing about handmade greeting cards is that there is no right or wrong. You can make any kind of card by using your creativity. The recipient will love the fact that you spent time, effort and energy on making a unique and special card for them.

Greeting Card Etiquette!!!

November 24, 2014 at 9:53 AMBernie Keane

Believe it or not there is such a thing as Greeting Card Etiquette, there's no point in just making a card for the sake of it, just follow the following tips and your friends/family will be delighted with the thought and effort you've put in!!!

Greeting Card Etiquette? Yes, It Exists!!

Many people may not be aware of this, but there are certain greeting card rules that should be followed. Family members and friends will be thrilled to receive a greeting card from you whether you follow proper etiquette or not. However, if you are sending a greeting card to your business partners, colleagues or other influential contacts, they might view it with a critical and discerning eye.

Here are a few basic etiquettes you must follow when sending a greeting card to someone:

Quality Greeting Card

Low quality and cheesy cards could indicate that you did not put much time into making the card. It may look like a very last minute job, which doesn’t give off a very good impression. Always create quality greeting cards as this indicates that you put in a little time and effort into producing this card for them.

Personalise The Envelope

The envelope is the first thing an individual sees. This is the reason why it is essential to give it a personal touch and ensure that it matches the theme and style of the card inside. You can modify it with adding a bit of colour or perhaps an embossed design to show off your creativity flare on the envelope. To add to the personal touch, it is so important to handwrite the envelope as this avoids looking like you were merely mass mailing. In other words avoid using computer generated labels!!!

Be Timely

Greeting cards should always be sent so they’ll arrive to the person on time. It is best to send the card well before time so that even if there are some postal delays, your card still arrives when it should.  If you forget the occasion then make sure to put a little extra thought or apology in your personal note for its delay.

Put in a Little Extra Effort

Make sure that whatever you are writing on the card is grammatically correct and properly punctuated.  Make sure there aren’t any spelling mistackes… Just making sure you are paying attention J  Hand writing a personal note and addressing the envelope shows that you aren’t just sending the card just for the sake of getting the task over with, but you have put effort and time into it. If you didn’t get time to make a personalised card and have to resort to a store bought one, you can still add some creativity by adding some bling to it or cut it in different shapes using die cuts.

Make it Memorable

If the recipient is someone near and dear to you, add that little extra personal touch to the card or add some card embellishments, stickers or charms that highlight a memory you two shared together. This shows just how much that person means to you.

These are some basic etiquette that you can follow when sending greeting cards. For more tips or advice keep your eye on our blog and also visit our website at www.bkcraftsupplies.ie

Wedding Card

November 4, 2014 at 12:15 PMBernie Keane

Made this wedding card using the Nellie Snellen Heart Die and just layered it up using alternative colours of cream and gold which gives a nice finish, I then added some Mr & Mrs ribbon and stamped swirls with Versamark using gold embossing powder and a Heat it Craft Tool heat gun.
